A space shooter where you can't die

Game Maker's Toolkit Game Jam 2018 was an online game jam. It was hosted on itch.io, and it was actually the largest jam to ever be hosted on the site. Unlike most of the other jams I've participated in, this one was a competition. As a prize, the top 20 user-voted (and, subsequently, hand-picked by the judge) submissions were featured on Game Maker's Toolkit, an increasingly popular YouTube channel focused on game design. There were over 1000 submissions, so the competition was heavy. However, I did pretty well, ultimately placing 507th in the jam.

GMTK Game Jam had a theme this year, which was "<Game Genre> without <Mechanic>". The idea was to design a game in a particular genre, but to remove a core mechanic players would expect to find in a game from that genre. For example, you might create a platformer without jumping, or a first person shooter where you can't stop shooting. It was a really fun idea!

Aethernauts - Beyond the Void was my end result. It's a space shooter where you can't die. Rather than dying when you get hit, you become a ghost and you must navigate back to your ship in order to continue fighting against the waves of enemies. This was the first game jam I participated in where I did absolutely everything (design, programming, art, music, and sound effects) myself. It was a very busy weekend, and I was feeling sick by the end. However, I'm very pleased with the end result.
